Islamabad—The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Adiala Jail authorities to arrange complete medical checkup of an arrested senior official of the Foreign Office, Shafqat Cheema who is facing charges of having assets (Rs90 million) beyond his income.
A division bench of the IHC comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb on Tuesday directed the authorities while hearing a post-arrest bail plea by Mr Cheema who is Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
NAB Prosecutor Muzaffar Abbasi told the court that NAB has filed a reference of Rs90 million against Cheema and soon a challan will be submitted before the court in this regard. Shafqat Cheema’s counsel submitted before the court that his client was a heart patient and if he suffers from a setback no one else but NAB will be responsible. He further said that the court during the last hearing had directed NAB medical examination of his client from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) but no progress has been made so far in that regard. Upon this NAB prosecutor Abbasi said conducting medical examination of the accused was not NAB’s responsibility. It is jail’s administration that is supposed to carry out such medical checkups etc.
After hearing the both sides, the court directed Cheema’s complete examination from Pims and adjourned hearing till date in office.
