Common strategy against blasphemy

IN a healthy sign, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan has said that a common strategy will be evolved against blasphemous contents on social media in consultation with Islamic countries. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said a meeting of ambassadors of Islamic countries has been convened to discuss the one point agenda of how to deal with this issue collectively.
One must give credit to Justice Shaukat Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court, who has taken up the issue of blasphemous contents on social media seriously and has expressed determination to go to the bottom of the mischief. He has also been trying to make relevant government authorities and institutions proactive in not only investigating the case but also take measures to prevent such things in future. It is also good that both Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan have categorically declared that there could be no compromise when it comes to the dignity and honour of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). They have also promptly taken up the issue with management of Facebook and hopefully something tangible would transpire after the proposed interaction. However, government seems to be helpless as FIA, which is supposed to probe the serious matter, is unable to carry out its job because of lack of required expertise. We have been making tall claims about technological advances especially in the field of IT but the Ministry of IT and Telecom and cyber wings of all relevant organisations have been rendered irrelevant. This is mainly because we are known for filling purely technical and professional posts through ‘Sifarish’ and palm-greasing and as a consequence compromise on service delivery. It is also understandable that issue of blasphemous contents on social media is not just a matter for Pakistan to ponder and take action but requires collective strategy by other Islamic countries as well. They must respond collectively to the challenge through joint diplomatic efforts on medium and long-term basis and develop meaningful cooperation to come out with a technological solution.
