German Unity Day was really festive
IT was festive. It was great, full of joy and happiness, factors of varied in nature, combining in one to turn a historic occasion like the Day of German Unity truly meaningful. Celebration, Illuminations right from the security zone, some 100 yards away on the road to the diplomatic mission’s main gate, within the premises of the consulate on side trees, walkways, trees and plants on the vast lawn within—all were lit with myriads of bulbs to present a fascinating atmosphere to the reception held by the consul general Rainer Schmiedchen and wife Annie for their second such great event during their stay in Karachi as their country’s honoured representatives.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, Senior Minister Nisar Khuhro, senator Nasreen Jalil, a galaxy of eminent personalities like Byram D Avari, wife Goshpi, Kalim Faroooqui, just back from a foreign business tour, wife Shaheena, parliamentarians, former ambassador Zia Ispahani, former governor and chief minister of Sindh, Mumtaz Bhutto with wife, Nadeem Kazmi, and many more. In fact the lawn spreading far and wide as a backyard to the consulate, was almost overflown with guests.
Such a marvelous turn out reflected the hosts popularity who within one year of their appointment here have won large number of friends. Indeed Annie and Rainer are a lovely couple, courteous, smiling, greeting with people with warm.
Their invitations to people of segments of the society, was bound to pay off, which it did. Among the elite were consuls general of France, Farancoise Dollorso, Republic of Korea Kim Dongi, Indonesia Hadi Santoso and wife Wati, of Thailand, the second in command of the UK deputy high commission Steeve Crossman, and also of USA Edward Burkalter, Mr Helmutt CEO of the German multinational Siemens, Dadex CEO, Qazi Sajid Ali, Dinshaw Avari, Ali Mohammad , well known artiste Jimmy Engineer, and several others whose names are not easy to remember without a proper list in hand.
Before the traditional ceremonies of national anthems and cake cutting to mark the memorable occasion the German consul general Rainer delighted the guests by saying that on reaching Karachi, he found the city vibrant, its business community enlightened and enterprising, and now that he is here in his second year, he was moved by the warmth and dynamism of the people. The German-Pakistan chambers of commerce and some other fora were hectically busy in promoting bilateral economic ties. That instilled a new energy in him. He said that many cultural projects were implemented in one year. From yesterday( Monday) an 11-week German festival was starting which could also see a German scholar lecture to Pakistanis on comic workshop for kids . A scientific cooperation between his country and Aga Khan Hospital will soon be executed.
In response, Chief Minister, ever mercurial and always on the move to set things right in government departments’ functioning as well as removing peoples’ grievances, looked forward to ever increasing German investment in Sindh, saying the province was very investment-friendly. It is developing alternate energy, wind power being on the of the list near Jhimpir and at other places. He said the province was trying to rid itself from the menace of terrorism, which would never be let down.
