Atif claims bronze in Asian qualifying round for Rio

Islamabad—Atif Arshad became first Pakistani taekwondo player in the history of Pakistan when on Sunday he claimed bronze medal in -87kg weight category of the ongoing Asian qualifying round for Rio Olympics at the Marriot Convention Centre Grand Ballroom in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines.
China’s Sen Qiao won gold, while Rulsan Zhaparov of Kazakhstan earned silver.
“This is a unique honour for any Pakistani taekwondo athlete to get the medal,” Pakistan Taekwondo Federation’s (PTF) president Lt Col Waseem Ahmed told APP.
Waseem credited the honour to continues support of Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) and Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).
After the Manila qualifiers, the 22nd Asian Taekwondo Championship and 4th Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championship will also commence at the same centre from on Monday in which Pakistani (male /female) athletes will also feature.—APP
