ATC judge among 5 injured in court blast

Karachi— Five persons were injured when an explosive device exploded at the Anti-terror Court No.3 on Monday. Those injured included an ATC judge, one ATC employee and a witness of a case.
When the Anti-terror Court started hearing in a particular case, the police investigation officer, appeared in the ATC along with explosive recovered from the accused. The police officer had brought the explosive device for showing it to the ATC Judge and placed it on Judge’s desk. The explosive device had all of a sudden went off and the ATC 3 Judge Shakeel Haider, an employee of the ATC, a witness and two others received injuries, All the injured were immediately shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
The police IO had failed to ensure that the explosive device was defused.
Following the blast, the judges of other ATCs rushed to a safer chamber of the judges.
The Karachi Police Chief Mushtaq Maher ordered an enquiry and the police IO has been suspended over carelessness.
Maher said that the suspended police official would face a stern action.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Karachi South, Dr Jameel Ahmed said the it was not an explosive device but a detonator that went off during display to the ATC Judge. The detonator was packed in a glass vessel.
The detonator was produced in the court and placed on the desk of the ATC Judge after the counsel of the defence had insisted on it and the ATC Judge has also directed the police Io to respond to the demand of the counsel of the defence. The detonator contained some quantity of explosive.
The DIG said that the security measures would be reviewed and restructured so that no such incident might take place in future.
On the other hand, Sindh Chief Secretary Siddique Memon has also ordered for enquiry.
