Sri Lankan selectors are “strongly considering” to send Asela Gunaratne to join squad in India, it is learnt here.
According to the highly placed sources, the 31-year-old right handed batsman and the right arm medium fast bowler may be sent before the third Test match (Delhi, December 2-6).
“He has to undergo the fitness tests and if he is fully fit, we are considering him to send to India for the final Test”, the source added.
“If we decide to send him, he will be an additional member of the touring party. All our players are fit enough now. No replacement is sought till now. Touch wood”, the source added.
In August this year, he suffered a serious fracture in his left thumb and was ruled out for the remaining ODIs and T-20 matches against India. Doctors had advised him 6-8 weeks rest and rehabilitation following the surgery.
One of the sources closely monitoring his fitness confirmed his availability.
Asela Gunaratne has played 6 Tests, 21 ODIs’ and 9 T-20 matches.
