Arsenic detected above permissible limit in drinking water: PCRWR

Arsenic, a major heavy metal contaminant, is detected above permissible limit of 50 ppb in 14 percent sources of water supply schemes in different parts of the country.
Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), conducted a study, “Provision of Safe Drinking Water” in which Nation-wide Assessment Survey of more than 10,000 water supply schemes has been performed.
A spokes person of PCRWR said according to the climate of Pakistan, they have declared 50 ppb arsenic less harmful but using water above this level for long term causes a number of diseases for human health including heart, kidney and skin diseases whereas symptoms of hyper tension are also reported in such users.
She further informed that they have reported to the Chief Secretaries and concerned departments of the respective areas where they found high level of aresenic in water to install water purification plants.—APP
