Army contributes to CJP’s fund

PAKISTAN Army has set an example by announcing a major contribution to the fund ‘Diamer-Basha and Mohmand Dam Fund-2018’ instituted by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar. According to the announcement all officers would donate two-day salary and all Jawans one-day salary to the fund. Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa also set a personal example by announcing to contribute one-month salary for the national cause.
With this laudable gesture, Pakistan Army has conveyed a clear message that it considers water security as critical as other aspects of national security. The decision is also in line with traditions of Pakistan Army to take lead when it comes to safeguarding national interests. Pakistan is presently facing serious water shortages and the situation is likely to assume alarming dimensions in years to come and that is why it has become imperative not to lose even a day in starting construction work on new water reservoirs. Thanks to the visionary thinking of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, a national debate has begun on this vital issue and there is now greater realisation that the country will have to take measures to store water and stop its wastage. It was not for the Chief Justice to talk about and chalk out plans for the purpose but Saqib Nisar is doing so for the sake of water security of the country. As financial constraints were cited to be one of the major hurdles in the way of speedy implementation of the water reservoirs, the CJP thought it appropriate not only to institute a fund for construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams but also made a personal contribution of one million rupees. Pakistan Army wasted no time in responding to the call of CJP and it is hoped that this would be emulated by other public and private sector organisations and institutions. There are individuals, companies and institutions that can surely contribute significantly for this noble objective so that the work is not delayed on account of financing. Apart from local sources, Overseas Pakistanis too have been forthcoming in such initiatives and we are confident they would also help raise the fund in a meaningful manner.
