Appointment of Dr Abdul Gafoor Memon as chairman SLA challenged

Hyderabad—A literary person has challenged the recent appointment of Dr Abdul Ghafoor Memon as Chairman of Sindhi Language Authority (SLA) in the Sindh High Court. The Hyderabad Circuit Bench here Wednesday issued notices to the respondents including Chief Secretary Sindh, Secretary Services, Secretary Culture, Secretary SLA, Chairman SLA and the search committee. The respondents have been ordered to submit reply on November 3. According to the details, the petitioner Dr Abdullah Aftab Abro maintained that the due process of selection through the search committee was not followed in the appointment of Dr Memon who was notified as Chairman SLA on Oct 10. Abro’s counsel Soulat Rizvi maintained that his client holds a PhD degree in Sindhi language development and had authored 20 books. However, he was among the 10 applicants for the posts excluding Dr Memon who had applied for the post of SLA Chairman but they were not given the due opportunity to present themselves as potential candidates for the post. The petitioner pleaded the court to nullify the appointment of Dr Memon and order the concerned department to begin the appointment process afresh while ensuring complete transparency. The SHC deferred the hearing till November 3 when the respondents would submit reply.—APP
