Karachi—The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) expressed its profound gratitude to the Finance Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue, Haroon Akhtar and the Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue for accepting proposals of media industry for the new budget.
Mr Umer Mujib Shami, Secretary General, APNS announcing the decisions taken at the Executive Committee meeting held on June 05, 2016 under the chairmanship of its President, Sarmad Ali, stated that the Executive Committee was briefed on the meeting of APNS and PBA held with the Finance Minister wherein the proposals of the media industry for the new budget was thoroughly discussed.
The Finance Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, Mr Haroon Akhtar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue and the Chairman, FBR passionately considered the proposals and very kindly agreed to withdraw the proposed Sales Tax on newspapers, not to enhance the Custom Duty on import of newsprint for APNS member publications and fixing the Withholding Tax for media industry @ 1.5% under the FTR Regime. The Executive Committee expressed its thanks to the Federal Government and appreciated the efforts of APNS Office Bearers to bailout the industry from the burden of proposed taxes.
The Executive Committee meeting was joined by Rao Tehseen Ali Khan, Principal Information Officer and briefed that the payment against the dues for devolved ministries and old outstanding bills were in the process of payment which will mature by the end of the current month.
The Executive Committee considered the applications for associate membership and decided to grant membership to Weekly Economic World, Lahore, Daily Sama, Islamabad and Weekly Taqat International, Lahore The meeting was attended by the following :
