Anti-polio drive kicks off in high-risk areas

About 9m children in 12 Sindh, 8 KP and 9 Punjab districts to be vaccinated

Islamabad—A five-day supplementary polio immunization drive would commence today (Monday) in the 12 districts of Sindh. According to Radio Pakistan that a total of 2.498 million children would be vaccinated in Karachi, Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Kamber, Dadu, Nawabshah, Sanghar and Naushahro Feroze districts.
Meanwhile, a three-day special anti-polio campaign also begins in selected areas of FATA, Frontier Regions and eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Official sources informed that more than nine hundred sixty five thousand children in FATA and one hundred ninety nine thousand children below the age of five in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be administered anti-polio drops during the three-day campaign.
Peshawar: More than 1.8 million children to be immunized in three day anti polio drive in eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including forty eight camps of IDPs and Afghan refugees. Coordinator Emergency Operation Center (EOC) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Akbar Khan said during informal chat with media persons here at EOC KP.
He said that 5730 teams of well-trained polio workers have been formed who are supervised by 1248 area in charges and supervisors to carry out an effective anti-polio vaccination. He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government under the direct supervision of Secretary Health Muhammad Abid Majeed is fully committed to eliminate the menace of polio from the province and despite of several challenges considerable decline has been noticed in polio cases in KP.
He added that it is not our target to curtail the number of cases but their target was complete elimination of polio from this province. He maintained that three days campaign started on July 25, 2016, whereas eight district include Peshawar, Bannu, DI Khan, Tank,Karak, Kohat, Hangu, Lakki Marwat are the targeted areas.
During the campaign 48 camps of IDPs, camps of Afghan refugees, and all the union councils will be accessed to immunize more than 1.8 million children. He said that out of 5730 teams 4900 are mobile teams, 434 fixed teams, 318 transit teams and 78 roaming teams.
Giving district-vise detail Akbar Khan said that 1275 teams are formed under 362 area in-charges In Peshawar, who are immunizing 6,21,000 children. In, DI Khan 1100 teams, under supervision of 223 area incharge to immunize 2, 76,000 children. In district Bannu 147 area incharge will supervise 648 teams to administer polio drops to 1, 93000 children.
Lahore: Polio campaign in selected nine districts from started on Monday. The campaign is being held from25 to 28 July 2016 in 411 union councils of the following districts: Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffar Garh (except Kot Addu), Layyah (Tehsil Layyah), Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan (Tehsil Sadiqabad), Bhakkar (except Tehsil Mankera), Mianwali, Rawalpindi (high risk union councils) and Multan (Urban Rural and Jalalpir Pirwala).
Earlier in his message, Advisor to Chief Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said the campaign was organized as case response to positive environmental sample in DG Khan and a polio case in Punjab’s adjoining district Dera Ismail Khan recently. “The areas deemed to be at greater risk to polio virus transmission have been selected,” he said. He said directives have been issued to these districts to undertake the activity perfectly.
Meanwhile, our correspondent from Khyber Agency reported that three days anti-polio campaign to vaccinate 221,000 children of under five years in Khyber Agency has been kicked off on Monday to eradicate polio disease from the region.
Officials said on Monday. According to the officials of the health department the anti-polio three days campaign would be carried out in Landikotal, Jamrud and Bara subdivisions of Khyber Agency where some 221,000 children would be given anti-polio drops.
