Anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat again

ANTI-Muslim riots erupted again in Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat resulting into killing of at least one Muslim and injuries to fourteen others. A crowd of about 5,000 people attacked Muslim residents and set dozens of homes and vehicles on fire at Vadavali village in Patan district on Saturday.
There is a sharp rise in anti-Muslim sentiments in India following assumption of power by an extremist party and leader in May 2014. A long-serving member of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Modi was chief minister of Gujarat at the time of 2002 riots, which resulted in worst anti-Muslim violence since partition in 1947. But regrettably Modi has not changed even after becoming Prime Minister of the ‘world’s biggest democracy’ and most recently appointed an avowed anti-Muslim Yogi as Chief Minister of UP. Adityanath is a hard-line advocate of Hindutva who supported President Donald Trumps visa ban against people from seven Muslim states and proposed that it should be done in India as well. There have been numerous instances of killing and beating of Muslims over suspected cow slaughter or selling of meat and there are even attempts for forcible conversion of Muslims into Hindu yet, during 2002 carnage when police said it had no orders to save Muslims, Modi Government is not only not acting to protect Muslims and their rights as a citizen but is tacitly approving their systematic elimination. That is why there are now talks about building of a Hindu temple in place of the historic Babri Mosque and even renaming of Deoband. This pattern of behaviour seems to indicate a settled policy of indifference and impunity on part of sitting government to inflame communal violence as a matter of routine. The much-hyped Indian Secularism appears bogus when judged by the scale, intensity and widespread nature of violence against India’s largest minority community since independence. It is also strange that some civilised members of international community make hue and cry over smallest of incident involving minorities in Pakistan yet there is shameful silence over systematic killing of Muslims and denial of their universally accepted rights as citizens of India.
