Alzheimer and dementia disease

Nearly 50 million people around the world suffer from Dementia and Alzheimer’s according to the latest estimates. This figure could balloon to 132 million by 2050. Researchers still have not been able to discover any causative factors for Alzheimer. According to them maintaining good hearing between the ages of 45 and 65 reduces the number of cases by 9%. Stopping smoking could reduce the number of cases by 5%. What we need to do to make sure that elders in our family, in the neighbourhood or around us, are taken good care of to avoid one of the worst forms of Alzheimer and Dementia disease. These diseases damage and kill brain cells, hampering its normal functioning. The Government should create such an environment where people with Alzheimer & Dementia can live with dignity in a supportive community environment; have access to diagnosis, information and treatment; and, be able to reduce their discomfort and disabilities. Government should set up specialty clinics, 24-hour help lines and day-care centres to help such patients.
