AI demands independent probe into killings

Islamabad—The Amnesty International India Chapter has demanded a full and independent criminal investigation into killing of civilians by Indian Army personnel in Handwara area of Indian occupied Kashmir.
The Amnesty International India in a statement issued in Bangalore said, “Authorities must conduct a full and independent criminal investigation into the killing of three protesters in firing by Indian Army personnel in Handwara, Jammu and Kashmir. Those responsible must be prosecuted in a civilian court of law.”
Amnesty International India Campaigner, Zahoor Wani, said that this was not the first time that Indian forces had opened fire on protesters. Reports that the Army used excessive force must be investigated, he added, kashmir Media Service reported.
“There were hundreds of protesters. They were demanding the arrest of the army man,” the statement quoted Zulkarnain Banday, an eyewitness, as having said.—APP
