Rehana Leghari elected Deputy Speaker

Pakistan Peoples Party’s Agha Siraj Durrani retained his post as Sindh Assembly speaker.
The election for the Sindh Assembly speaker was held on Wednesday with Durrani being re-elected after receiving 96 votes. He was contesting against MQM-Ps Javed Hanif who received 59 votes. The PPP had submitted nomination papers for Durrani as the speaker and Rehana Leghari as the deputy speaker in the provincial assembly. The joint opposition had fielded Javed Hanif of MQM-P for the post of speaker and PTI’s Rabia Azfar Nizami for deputy speaker. The elections for the two posts were held through secret balloting by 165 elected members of the 168-member house.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Rehana Leghari was elected deputy speaker of the Sindh Assembly here Wednesday during the session presided over by Agha Siraj Durrani, the re-elected speaker of the house. PPP’s Durrani, earlier in the day, was elected speaker clinching 96 votes against 59 bagged by his opponent Javed Hanif, the joint candidate of the opposition benches.
Nadir Magsi, a member of the provincial assembly representing the treasury benches, served as presiding officer to oversee the polling process with Khurram Sher Zaman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as polling agent for the opposition’s joint candidates Javed Hanif and Rabia Azfar Nizami for the two positions respectively. MPA Nasir Hussain Shah of the PPP facilitated the process as polling agent for his party’s candidates. Rehana Legahri is the fourth woman deputy speaker of the provincial assembly.—APP
