Hafizabad—90 percent construction work has been completed on multipurpose mega project of remodeling of Head Khanki Barrage on the River Chenab near Wazirabad and this project would be completed with the total cost of Rs.23.42 billion.
According to official sources of Irrigation Department, construction work on this project was started in 2013 funded by Asian Development Bank for replacing 100 year old structure of the barrage and enhancing storage capacity of water as well as to preserve wastage of water and better supply of irrigational water for cultivation to thousands of acres land.
He said that storage capacity of water would be enhanced from 8 lakh cusec to 11 lakh cusec in new barrage and supply of irrigational water to thousands acres land of district Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Jhang, toba Take Sing and Chiniot would be improved which would helpful for increasing per acre agricultural yield and socio-economic condition of farmers would also be improved in these districts.
He said that construction work on establishment of computerized flood control room and installation of computerized gates was underway.
He said that with enhancing storage capacity of water in the barrage, flood situation in the River Chenab would be controlled in better way and this multipurpose project would provide be completed in next financial year.
