80pc eye patients can be cured with timely treatment

Rawalpindi—President Al-Shifa Trust Lt. Gen (Retd) Hamid Javed, Thursday, said that almost 2 million people were prone to eye related diseases in Pakistan and 80% could be cured, however, it could not happen due to unavailability of required facilities.
Briefing a group of senior journalists, columnists and researchers about the functions, performance as well as major achievements of Al-Shifa Trust here, he said that Al-Shifa had made preparations for the provision of required facilities along with specialized focus upon children.
“In this regard, ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a children eye hospital has already been performed by the President Mamnoon Hussain on April 06 this year” he obaserved adding that project would be completed in next two years and training of the doctors for this purpose had been started. It will be the biggest children eye hospital in this region.
Responding to questions, Lt Gen (Rtd) Hamid Javed said that Al-Shifa had taken new initiative regarding collection of eye donations from the US and Canada. “Presently, around 60 eye transplant surgical operations are being conducted per month by capable Al-Shifa team and we plan to enhance the number of surgical operations up to 100 per month in next six months” he maintained. He further said that Al-Shifa planned to set up small eye treatment units in remote areas provide state of the art eye treatment facilities to the people.
