A eight-day inject able/inactivated polio vaccine(IPV) and Oral Polio drops(OPV)campaign kicked off in 30 high risk union councils of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation ,Tehsil Taxila and Rawalpindi Cantonment areas on Monday to cover more than 159,000 children below five years of age, District Polio Incharge Muhammad Hussain informed that the immunisation campaign was in full swing.
Under the drive, teams were being visiting 11 union councils of the city ,4 union councils of Tehsil Rawalpindi,6 union councils of Taxila and 9 wards of Rawalpindi Cantonment area which have been declared high-risk areas.
The Polio Incharge said that inactivated polio vaccine(IPV) through injections are being administered to children below two years of age, in addition oral polio vaccine (OPV)are also being administered to children under five years of age. He said that IPV was more effective as it enhance the immune system of the child to fight the crippling disease at least for a year and it was being done on the recommendation of World Health Organization (WHO). During the campaign, he said, different vaccinations were also being administered to children of two years of age to take preventive measures and effectively fight chronic diseases like Polio, Measles, Pertussis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Hepatitis-B and Tuberculosis. —APP
