Karachi—A three-day polio eradication drive commenced in the metropolis on Monday.
Commissioner Karachi, Syed Asif Haider Shah, performed the inauguration of the drive by administering polio drops to children at Sobraj Hospital here.
Talking to media, he highlighted the significance of the campaign and said that the honour of the country as well as the future of the children is linked with it.
He said that during the three-day campaign some 2.2 million children would be administered polio drops in 188 union councils.
The Commissioner pointed out that the number of refusals was less than 50,000 in the months of December and January and now this has been reduced to one-third. He urged the parents to ensure administering polio drops to the children for the future of these youngsters.
This should also be done in case of those who were already administered polio drops because this would enhance resistance against the virus and there is no harm in this.
The Commissioner was of the view that there were a number of reasons for the refusal and these include lack of information regarding the benefits of such a drive.
He said that a help line has been established at the Commissioner’s Office and in case a polio team is not reached in an area the information can be provided for this on 1299.
