Colombo—Sri Lanka is to demolish its 28 prisons and build new ones of international standards in the outskirts of towns, Minister for Prison Reforms D.M.Swaminathan said that most of the prisons are over a hundred years old and ill-maintained . Whilethe population has increased and the crime rate has also gone up, the number of prisons and their size, has remained the same, he told a group of media personnel.
The historic Bogambara Prison in Kandy has already been re-located. On the model to be followed Swaminathan said that there are number of international models but his preference would be the Malaysian model.
