238 dengue cases registered in September

A sudden surge was registered in dengue fever across Karachi during the current month, with 238 patients referred to different hospitals against 887, including six deaths, during first eight months this year.
According to report issued by Dengue Prevention, Control and Management Program for Sindh here on Friday a total of 2418 dengue fever cases were registered in 2016 with two dengue hemorrhagic fever induced deaths during the entire year.
Dr. Abdul Rashid Shaikh, Program Manager for Dengue Control and Prevention said the worst hit areas are those yet to be provided with piped water, hence compelled to have makeshift arrangements for water storage, often without proper cover hence easing breeding of the dengue specific mosquitoes.
Talking to APP, he said although the virus perists in the local environment, however, due to public information and education campaigns its associated complications manifested in form of dengue hemorrhagic fever have been largely contained.
Dr. Shaikh said a different strain of dengue virus is also responsible for chikunguniya that though is a self limiting conditon, however, does cause of morbidity among the sufferers.
Prevention, he said is prerequisite to counter severities consequent to the peculiar virus that has been largely controlled but yet to be eradicated.—APP
