21 more bodies identified, being handed over to relatives

Forensic team of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has identified twenty-one (21) more bodies of the PK-661 passengers and they are now being handed over to their relatives. On Wednesday last (Dec 7), the ATR plane of the Pakistan international airlines fleet had crashed near Abbottabad. There were a 48 passengers and five crew members and one ground engineer on board making it a total of 54. PIMS doctors had started verifying the bodies from Dec 9. Initially 13 bodies were identified and on Wednesday 21 more bodies were identified and the government has made arrangements to either hand them over to the relatives or transport them to their native towns/villages across the country including Chitral and Karachi.
The government minister, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry while talking to media outside the hospital said usually the process of identification of the dead bodies after such a catastrophic incident takes 8 to 10 days, yet our doctors worked day and night and using various methods and taking dental histories etc have identified so far 34 of the passengers on board. Giving details, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said on the first day after the air crash when the dead bodies were brought to the hospital, 8 were identified with the help of their luggage and other belongings, five by their dental history. With verification of 21 more bodies now the figure stands at 34. About Junaid Jamshed he said his body was determined by his dental history. Later it was re-verified with the help of DNA test, he said. Junaid Jamshed’s brother Humayun Javed has received his body from Rawat mortuary and a special aircraft of the PAF C-130 has flown it to Karachi. To a question, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the government can understand and shares the grief of the relatives of the deceased. We have made all the adequate arrangements for their (relatives) stay and food in the PIMS and we have utilized all the resources and our doctors are working against time to complete the task of dead bodies’ verification before the stipulated time. About the 13 bodies which were determined earlier, he informed they were: Ehsan, Amna Ahmed, Mahrukh Ahmed, Haji Nawaz, foreigner Herwig Eichelbenger, Neha Junaid, Takbeer Khan, Usama Ahmed, Samiur Rehman, Captain Saleh Janjua, Asma Adil and Sadaf Farooq.
On Wednesday the following bodies were identified: Akbar Ali, Akhtar Mehmood, Ammar Shaukat, Attique Mohammad, Gohar Ali, Ali Akram, Ahmed Janjua, Khalid Masood, Khawar Sohail, Noman SHafiq, Nasirud Din, Taimoor Arshad and Amra Khan.
