14th Balijee International Bridge Championship begins on March 20

Lahore—The 14th Balijee International Bridge Championship will commence from 20th March and for four days,from 20th to 23rd March, the bridge tables of Lahore Gymkhana will be invaded by accomplished bridge players from all over Pakistan and abroad .This was stated by Aijaz Ahmed of Yummy Milk Products at a press conference at Lahore Gymkhana yesterday also attended and adressed by Ihsan Qadir ,Tournament Director and Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed,Director Media of the Championship. Aijaz Ahmed further said that ,this event is being held after a gap of nearly six years which was primarily due to the security conditions in the country ,which prevented foreign teams from participating even in events of international acceptability and standing.
Ihsan Qadir ,the Tournament Director stated that the Championship is generously and graciously sponsored by Mr. Ajaz Ahmad of Yummy Milk Product (Pvt) Ltd who has agreed to revive it.As was in the case of the previous thirteen such championships,this 14th edition Is also being held In memory of his Late father Mr. Muhammad Iqbal profoundly known to his fraternity as Balijee.
Ihsan Qadir further said that invitations were extended to teams from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Lebanon ,UAE and Jordan. As of now confirmation of particiaption has been received from a ladies team of Lebanon and an Open Team from Jordan.
The Indian teams are in the making and breaking but it is generally felt that they are apprehensive due to security issues.However one single Indian from Bombay has accepted the invitation and will take part in the Championship as part of one of the teams from Karachi.In this regard the teams from Bangladesh have also accepted the invitation with confirmation still awaited.
Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed stated that from within the country ,twelve teams from Karachi , four from Rawalpindi /Islamabad, one team each from Multan, Hyderabad and Abottabad have agreed to participate.Lahore also will be strongly represented and the teams participating are twelve in number.It was explained that this makes the participation to the maximum capacity of the tournament
Ihsan Qadir further spelt out that the Competition is becoming tougher year by year, Amongst the strong contenders of this event would be The Teams “BILALS” , “DATA STEEL”, “MAZHARS” & “STRIKERS” from Karachi , Jordan Team Consisiting of Sakher Malkawi (captain) Aaida Abu Jaber, Randa Al Saket, Azza Qashu,Hala Sawwaf & Mais Albittar. Almost all the players have played for the Jordan’s National Team. Lebanon Team Consists of Nahla / Faycal both outstanding players along with pair of Hana. These two foreign teams are expected to well.
