The first bunker for installing a linear accelerator worth Rs 202 million at 100-bed Cancer Centre of the Nishtar Hospital is about to complete. Head of Oncology Department Nishtar Medical University (NMU) Dr Ahmad Ejaz Masood told APP here on Friday that rays of cancer machines were very dangerous, therefore, walls and ceiling of the bunkers were much thicker.
He added walls thickness of the first bunker was five feet while the ceiling was 20 feet. He said a deadline for completion of the bunker was August this year. Another two bunkers in the basement of the centre would be constructed for installing Digital and CT Stimulators, Dr Masood said and added the machines were used to treat cancer patients at different stages.
Replying a question, the Oncologist said revised PC-1 for 100-bed of cancer centre would be sent to the federal government soon. To another question, Dr Masood said the centre was likely to be completed by 2019. Patients, he said, were being treated at Cobalt 60 (Co-60) machine at present.
Answering a question, Dr Masood said technicians operating these machines underwent a training.—APP
