Islamabad/Lahore/Karachi/Peshawar/Quetta—Yaum-e-Ashur being observed today (Wednesday) with due solemnity and sanctity to pay homage to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (Razi Allah-ho Tala Anho) and his companions in Karbala.
Alam, Zuljinah and Taazia processions will be taken out in all small and big cities of the country.
The Ulema and Zakireen will highlight the teachings of Hazrat Imam Hussain and various aspects of Karbla tragedy.
Strict security measures have been taken along the routes of processions to avoid any untoward incident.
The holy month of Muharram commemorates the death of Imam Hussain (R.A), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and other martyrs in the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in the year 680.
The federal government has already announced two public holidays on account of Ashura on October 11 and 12.
Meanwhile the mourning processions to commemorate tragic events of Karbala on 9th Muharram were taken out in various cities across the country amid tight security and culminate at their destinations.
In Karachi, the procession has been taken out from Nishtar Park at 1pm and culminated at Hussanian Iranian Imam Bargah before Maghrib after passing through Numaish Chowrangi, Sea Breeze, Empress Market, Reegal Chowk, Tibet Centre, Radio Pakistan, Bolton Market and Kharadar.
Strict security arrangements are in place for the procession. Roads have been blocked by containers, shops have been sealed, snipers are deployed in buildings, BDS officials will carry out sweeping and area will be searched by sniffer dogs.
In Lahore, a Zuljinnah procession started from the Atia Ahle Bait Imam Bargah on Nicolson Road after Majlis-i-Aza at 7am.
In Islamabad, the main procession was taken out from G-6 imambargah and after passing through its declared rout was culminated.
In Rohri, 9th Muharram procession was taken out from Imam Bargah Shah Iraq under tight security. The procession culminated at Mandu Khabar after passing through its traditional route.
A large number of mourners from Sukkur and other districts participated in the procession. Tight security arrangements were made for the safety of the mourners.
The procession has been monitored using helicopter surveillance while police and Rangers personnel have been deployed along the route of the procession.
In Hyderabad, the mourning procession was taken out from Latifabad No.2 amidst strict security. A Majlis-i-Aza addressed by Hassan Abbas Jaffery was also held.
In a wake of security concerns on 9th Muharram, pillion riding and mobile phone service was banned in various cities.
The local authorities have ensured all the security measurements to avoid any untoward incident as pillion riding has been completely restricted in various cites.
Security was beefed up in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and Multan while different major cities faced suspension of mobile phone service.
Small towns including Narowal, Okara, Jhang and Rahim Yar Khan are also witnessing ban on pillion riding which will be continued till today 10 Muharram.
Security personnel have also been directed to remain alert at entrance and exit points of the cities.
