Triclosan a harmful toxicant

Triclosan is a white colored solid powder having phenolic or slightly aromatic odour. It is a toxic chemical which was first introduced in 1969 in the United States. This chemical was basically used in hospitals but later in different products which include anti-bacterial soaps, toothpaste, children toys, cleaning products, dish washers, deodorants, laundry detergents, furniture fabrics and paints. It kills the natural bacteria of skin along with the harmful bacteria. This makes skin more vulnerable to infection and bacterial diseases.
It has been revealed that Triclosan is a highly toxic chemical that is responsible for many diseases. It affects our body hormone system especially the thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism. Increased concentration of Triclosan in body alters immune system functioning e.g. asthma, allergies, eczema etc. Triclosan is lipophilic (that stored in fats) and carcinogenic (cancer causing). It starts accumulating and affects the food chain through bioaccumulation. When it breaks down in environment it forms dioxins which are the most toxic chemicals on earth. It has a very harmful impact on aquatic environment especially on algae and phytoplankton. In order to prevent from all these diseases we need to do some preventive measures like (1) Use plain soaps rather than antibacterial soaps (2) Limit your use of products containing Triclosan especially if you are pregnant and (3) Use care products which are free from these harmful chemicals.
