Top seed Laiba, Nimra advance in KP Girls U-15 Squash C’ship semi-finals


Peshawar—Top seed Laiba Ijaz, Nimra Aqeel, Niama Khalid and Hira Rafique took berth into the semi-finals after recording victories against their respective rivals in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Girls Under-15 Squash Championship being played here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Wednesday.
Noorjat Munir, a former squash player, was the chief guest on this occasion. Former World Champion Qamar Zaman, Chief Referee Munawar Zaman, Nargis Bakhash, officials, players and spectators were also present.
In the first match Laiba Ijaz, the top seeded player, defeated Manahil in straight set, the score was 11-6, 11-8 and 11-5. Laiba fully dominated the proceedings and did not give much time to Manahil to play with free hands.
In the second quarter-final Niama Khalid beat Eman Khan by 3-1, the score was 11-9, 5-11, 12-10 and 11-7. Niama Khalid fully dominated the proceeding and played with great confidence. Niama Khalid only faced tough resistance in the three sets, otherwise she marched into victory.
In the other thrilling match Nimra Akeel beat Mahaira Khan by 3-0, the score was 11-5, 11-9 and 11-8.
Both Nimra and Mahaira provided great thrill but Nimra did not look behind and marched into victory. In the fourth quarter-final Hira Rafique shocked Sana Khan by 3-2, the score was 10-12, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9 and 11-7.
The semi finals will be played on Thursday while the final of the Championship will be played on Friday. Talking to media, former World Champion Qamar Zaman said that Pakistan Squash Federation have given more importance to the female squash players. Qamar Zaman said for this the KP Hockey Association decided to hold more and more events in order to involve female players. —APP
