Support furniture industry

PAKISTAN Furniture Council held yet another successful Interiors Pakistan Exhibition at Expo Centre Lahore recently showcasing a wide variety of furniture and associated products. Participation of over fifty leading companies and interior designers in the mega event and interest shown by visitors in different wooden products is not only a tribute to creativity and originality with which our local artisans do the woodwork but credit also goes to organisers for providing such a platform to designers to display their wide ranging products for much greater exposure.
In fact, the exhibition also provided space to young designers and architects to also see the market trends and learn from the work of those who have a big market base in the country. Given the talent and skills of our local manufacturers, we have no doubt that they can capture the international market and that too in a sizeable manner if such exhibitions are also conducted in other cities of the world especially the Gulf where there is great demand of Pakistani products ranging from fruit, vegetable to garments. We have no doubt that our furniture industry also has a great potential and products being prepared especially in Chiniot, Gujrat, Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi are famous for their distinctive designs all across the country. Over the last decade or so, our interior designs industry has witnessed a positive growth and with right kind of intervention and support especially exposure at the international level, it can attract foreign clientele as well. Demand of Pakistan Furniture Council that they should be given the status of a full-fledged industry and provided with required support such as provision of raw material at reasonable rates and skill development to the youth in this particular field is timely and justified. By doing this, we will not only diversify our export basket but this will also contribute to GDP growth and provide employment opportunities to numerous people having varying skills in furniture making. We, therefore, urge the government to announce a comprehensive incentive package for furniture manufacturers and help them showcase their products abroad.
