Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has taken a special leave from his IPL commentary assignment “to celebrate” the birth centenary of late Vinoo Mankad on Wednesday.
“The Legends’ Club (Mumbai) has invited India’s former opening batsman and captain Sunil Gavaskar on the occasion of Vinoo Mankad’s birth anniversary on Wednesday and Gavaskar, who otherwise would have been busy in IPL’s commentary on Wednesday during the Mumbai Indians vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad match at the Wankhede Stadium, has consented to grace the occasion”, Masdhav Apte, the president of the Club, said exclusively.
The Legends Club (Mumbai) invites sports persons to deliver lectures on birth anniversary of the few legends the club has recognised.
“We have also invited Salim Durrani, who was coached by late Vinoo Mankad. The key speakers are not given any subject but since it is Mankad’s 100th birth anniversary,we expect them to speak on him”, Apte, who has also played with Mankad, said.
“Vinoo Mankad’s only surviving son, Rahul (he played First Class cricket) is also expected to say a few words on his father”, Apte signed off.
School mates changed his name
Vinoo was not Mankad’s real name, says cricket statistician Sudhir Vaidya.
“Although Mankad’s full name was Mulwantrai Himmatlal Mankad, he was known in the house by the pet name of “Minu”. But his school-mates converted it into “Vinoo” which has become more popular and he still continues to be known as Vinoo Mankad rather than M H Mankad”, Vaidya, who spent two months with him for his biography titled Vinoo Mankad, said from Pune.
“The name plate on the door of his flat in South Bombay (now Mumbai) also read “Vinoo Mankad”’, Vaidya further added.
