Pakistan’s athletics community suffered a major loss on Saturday when sprinter Nadia Nazeer and her son were killed in a car accident.
Wapda athlete Nadia, who has bagged several medals for Pakistan at international level and holds several national records, was on her way to Sahiwal with her family when her car collided with a trailer near Bahawalnagar.
Her five-year-old child died on the spot, whereas she passed away later on. Nadia’s husband was also critically injured in the accident and is currently being treated.
Before her untimely demise, Nadia had been training diligently to participate in the upcoming National Athletics Championship. Pakistan Sports Board and Athletics Federation have expressed their grief at the unfortunate accident, while Wapda has declared a day of mourning in Nadia’s remembrance.
This is the second woman athlete Pakistan’s sporting fraternity has lost to a road accident in a matter of months. Last year, footballer Shahlyla Baloch also lost her life in a car accident in Karachi.
Nadia was heading back to Sahiwal from a wedding ceremony with her husband and son when their car was hit by a speeding trailer at Chishtian Road near Ada Amin Kot.
Nadia, from Sahiwal, holds the distinction of winning five bronze medals in international 400 metre sprints.
