Ukrainian writer wins appreciation for translating Urdu poems

Zubair Qureshi

Poetry connects people’s hearts and brings diverse cultures and civilizations together. These views were expressed by Ambassador of Ukraine Volodymyr Lakomov who was addressing as chief guest a book launching ceremony titled “Selected Poems” by Irshad Ullah Khan translated by Vasyal Ivashko into Ukrainian language. Embassy of Ukraine and Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) had jointly organized the event.
Chairman PAL, Dr Muhammad Qasim Bughio presided over the ceremony. Introducing both the poet and the translator, he said the book would serve to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. Vasyl Ivashko, Counselor, Embassy of Ukraine, Translator of book said the book simply touched his heart and after reading it he could not help translating it.
The ceremony was followed by English Mushaira presided over by Dr Ehsan Akbar. In his address as Chief Guest Ukrainian Ambassador said this book was published when both Ukraine and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
He said that diplomacy, politics and trade unite peoples and states with long-lasting relation and pragmatic ties. At the same time, a true poetry connects people’s hearts. The more truthful a poetry is, the easier it finds ways to human hearts, no matter how distance they are in time and space. He said that therefore an intensive political and diplomatic dialogue between the two countries, close trade and economic relations and people-to-people contacts should be based on a sound spiritual basis-ancient cultural traditions of Ukraine and Pakistan.
Dr. Muhammad Qasim Bughio said that PAL had its head office at Islamabad and five regional offices at Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan which are working for the promotion of literature and literary activities. Holding of literary conferences, seminars, book launching and receptions for visiting writers’ delegations (inside and outside the country) is also a regular feature of these offices. You would appreciate that being chairman of this Academy, I am confident to say that PAL is putting efforts at its best to highlighting, promoting and showcasing the Pakistani literature and related activities across the world which is indeed a huge task. He said Although Pakistan and Ukraine were enjoying good relations from the last seventeen years but bilateral relationship needs to be more strengthening and after conducting this evening, I truly believe that this jointly organised literary program will set a benchmark in enhancing literary relationship between Pakistan & Ukraine. I am quite confident that both countries have lot of potential & we can enhance our literary relations by having joint ventures, this will boost-up the relations between the two countries.
An English Language Mushaira was the last session of the book launching ceremony which was presided over by Dr. Ehsan Akbar. Poets of twin cities rendered their poetry in English Language.
