In accordance with World Kidney Day 2017 an awareness seminar organized by Pakistan Kidney Patients Association (PKPA) in Rawalpindi .In the seminar the health experts highlighted the causes of kidney diseases & stressed the ways of prevention . Speaking on this occasion the renowned health expert Dr.Brig.(r). Muhammad Sadiq said, “Obesity is a potent risk factor of kidney diseases. It increases the risk of developing major risk factors of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), like diabetes and hypertension, and it has a direct impact on the development of CKD and end stage renal disease (ESRD).”
He maintained that kidney disease is more likely to develop in obese people including those with diabetes and hypertension.
He said that the number of kidney patients in Pakistan is rising at an alarming rate and diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes of end stage renal failure. Sadly, both conditions are widely overlooked in Pakistan. Approximately, 60 percent of patients requiring long term hem dialysis have lost their kidneys due to either diabetes or high blood pressure, he said.
The Pakistan Kidney Patients Association (PKPA) chairman General (r). Sarfraz Iqbal told that PKPA is a non profitable charity organization which provides free dialysis, lab test and treatment to the poor kidney patients. Over 50 to 60 patients get the treatment of dialysis daily. PKPA is purely being run on donations.
The treatment of kidney disease is very expensive including its transplant before and after operation. A common man or a middle class segment could not bear the expenses of treatment of kidney. Sensing the gravity of the situation PKPA established a Dialysis and Kidney in Center.
He also told that KPKA is planning to establish a new centre in Rawat containing 100 dialysis machines.
