Karachi—Prof Dr Hasan Zafar Arif of the London-based Muttahida Qaumi Movement said on Saturday that there was no such thing as MQM-Pakistan, adding that the party could not even conceive the idea of a minus-one formula.
MQM-London leaders, in their first press conference after August 22 anti-state speech by MQM founder, rejected ‘minus one’ formula and said, “Neither minus-one be carried out nor it is possible.”
He said, “Altaf Hussain is an inalienable part of the party.” Coordination committee of Muttahida Qaumi Movement in London questioned the identity of coordination committee in Pakistan, led by Dr Farooq Sattar.
MQM London leader said, they were holding this presser in response to minus-one formula. Zafar Arif said, there was no such thing like MQM London or Pakistan, it is only one which is headed by Altaf Hussain. It will remain one, he emphasized. Hassan Zafar Arif, Advocate Sathi Ishaq, Kanwar Khalid Younus attended the press conference.
MQM London leaders reposed confidence in the leadership of Altaf Hussain during their presser.
Rangers, deployed in Sindh with exclusive policing powers and Sindh Police sealed the roads leading to Karachi Press Club where the conference was held.
Ishaq Advocate said that founder of the political party nominated him, Amjadullah and Dr Hassan Zafar last night to represent the party’s stance as its coordination committee governed from London. The committee demanded the government and law enforcement agencies to reopen sealed offices of MQM including headquarters in Nine-Zero.
As he addressed the media, Dr Zafar rubbished difference between Muttahida Qaumi Movement London and that of Pakistan which is claimed by Dr Farooq Sattar and the body he leads. Dr Zafar demanded that MQM should be permitted to conduct political activities without any hindrance.
He complained that founder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement was detached with the party by making amendment in the constitution of the political organisation. Dr Farooq Sattar and Khalid Maqbool got the organisation, founded by the party ‘chief’, “hijacked,” he alleged.
There was no gravity that “minus one formula” could hold in Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Dr Zafar asserted.
He said that Pak Sarzameen Party was established by bringing back some persons who sold their conscience. Criticising Mustafa Kamal, chief of PSP and others siding with him, Dr Zafar claimed that they were given bungalows worth millions of rupees and lavish living. However, he said that the people of Karachi rejected the politics and standing of PSP. Dr Hasan Zafar said operations were carried out against MQM, its members were arrested, the party’s headquarters were sealed and cases were launched against Altaf Hussain but the party has remained in tact.
“There is only one MQM…the founder of which is Altaf Hussain,” Dr Hasan Zafar said, adding that the ban against Altaf Hussain instituted in Pakistan should be removed, missing members of MQM be allowed to go home and the operation against MQM be stopped.
“Those who are today MQM’s MNAs and MPAs came to their positions because of Altaf Hussain,” Dr Hasan Zafar said, adding that the MQM chief should not be treated as a guilty man simply because there is a case against him.
The Rabita Committee member said MQM had not been registered in the name of Altaf Hussain as he had had to leave Pakistan before the party’s registration.
On Friday, MQM-London announced formation of a new 12-member interim Rabita Committee, according to a press statement. The committee comprises Nadeem Ehsaan, Wasay Jalil, Mustafa Azizabadi, Prof Hassan Zafar Arif, Ishaq Advocate, Amjadullah Khan, Kunwar Khalid Younus, Ashraf Noor, Akram Rajpoot, Ismail Sitara, Idrees Alvi Advocate and Momin Khan Momin.
