Misuse of social media

OVER the years, the social media in our society has emerged as a sort of creature totally uncontrollable. Instances of harassment, abuse, blackmailing and mudslinging have become a routine matter on this medium. The situation has reached to such an alarming level that certain elements are now resorting to slanderous and negative propaganda campaign against the constitutional state institutions.
How despicable is it that country’s armed forces, which enjoy respect of the entire nation, of late have been subjected to smear campaign by a certain group on social media? We have no doubt in saying that these elements are the ones who want clash amongst the state institutions following an amicable solution to Dawn Leaks issue and therefore strict action should be taken against them immediately in accordance with the law so that nobody in future could dare to indulge in such activity aimed at maligning the forces. Taking notice of the situation, Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar has ordered the cyber crime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency to take action against all those bringing disrepute to Pakistan Army through the social media. We, indeed, have no doubt on the intentions of the Interior Minister who is known as a man of action but as far as the cyber wing is concerned, we do not believe it has the capacity and capability to trace these elements. In the past also, such tasks were given to the cyber wing but it failed to bring most of them to logical conclusion. Given Internet and social media onslaught in recent times, it has become all the more imperative that relevant departments such as FIA cyber wing are fully revamped and equipped and manned with experts having complete knowledge of Internet based tools. This is in the only way the authorities can effectively check cyber related crimes or other undesirable activities on the social media.
