In occupied Kashmir, the puppet authorities placed the Chairman of Hurriyet forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest in Srinagar, today.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was scheduled to preside over a seminar at the headquarters of the forum in Rajbagh, today, in connection with the Martyrdom Week. However, the authorities put the Mirwaiz and his media advisor, Shahid-ul-Islam under house detention. The puppet authorities also put the forum leader, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, under house arrest in Islamabad town when he tried to move towards Srinagar to participate in the seminar.
The forum is organizing different programmes in connection with the ongoing Martyrdom Week being observed to pay tributes to prominent Hurriyet leaders, Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone and martyrs of Hawal.
It is worth mentioning here that unidentified gunmen had shot dead Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq after barging into his residence in Srinagar on 21st May in 1990. On the same day, seventy mourners were killed when Indian troops fired at the funeral procession of the martyred leader in Hawal area of Srinagar.
Twelve years later, on the same day in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone was martyred by unknown attackers when he was returning from addressing a gathering at the Martyrs’ Graveyard in Srinagar.—KMS
