Lahore to be among top 10 Asian mega cities: Ahmed

Lahore—Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Khawaja Ahmed Hassaan has said that the PML-N government was committed to turning Lahore into a top Asian metropolis with the best civic facilities. In an interview with APP here on Sunday, he said mega cities depended on connectivity, strengthening of economic circle and provision of easy and speedy access to workplaces, adding that mass transit system had been part and parcel of development in all modern cities. Khawaja Hassaan, who is also chairman of the Steering Committee on Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT), said projects like metro train had been launched to ensure fast transportation and communication facilities for masses and development of businesses. To a query, he said the government went ahead with the Metro train project, as it fulfilled all criteria set by the environment assessment agencies, adding that the train would also save the public from traffic blocks, a menace faced by modern cosmopolitan cities across the world. About the benefits of the Metro Train, he said the project had created thousands of jobs, boosted economic activity and strengthened Pak-China bilateral ties.
To a query, Hassaan said 250,000-300,000 commuters would benefit from the facility daily, adding that the Metro Train would provide speedy and punctual mode of transportation to people.
The PML-N stalwart said the project would go a long way in realising the dream of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to serve masses and turn the city into one of the top 10 Asian cities, adding that effective means of communication and transportation, sanitation, health and education facilities were priorities of the government.
