Doctors protest HPA non-payment

Abbottabad—On the call of Ayub Teaching Staff Association of (ATSA), all senior doctors including Professors, Associate & Assistant Professors has observed two hours strike on Monday and had suspended all the elective services including Out Patients Departments (OPDs) & Operation Theatres to record their protest against the decision of Board of Governors (BoG) for not providing Health Professional Allowance (HPA) to teaching cadre.
Protest meeting was held at Ayub Teaching hospital in which representatives of ATSA told that Minister and Secretary Health were repeatedly asked for the provision of HPA but failed to get any response.
They said that they were forced to launch their token strike of boycotting classes and elective services to patients for three days after which future course of action will be decided. They claimed that main objective of Medical Teaching Institutes (MTI) reforms Act was improvements in health Teaching institutions and patients care but they failed to take any step in this regard.
They shown wonder that a house officer is getting salary more than Assistant professor which is disgrace of the teaching faculty of entire province. They stressed the need of patients care in the hospital and argued that meetings of BoG have been shifted to Islamabad which clearly shows their interest in autonomy of the institutions.
Those who addressed the protest gathering include office bearers of interim cabinet of ATSA , Professor Dr Jehangir Khan, Dr Ishfaque , Dr Umer Hayat, Dr Mukhtar, Dr Matiullah and Dr Amin Afridi. Doctors have asked the provincial government to take appropriate steps for the betterment of medical teaching institutes of the province and resolve issues of the teaching staff. Joint action committee of ATSA has decided to continue their token strike for three days.
