Trying to remain number one..!
“Yippee!” cried Mukesh as he glanced at the morning papers, “I’m still the fourth richest man in the world!” Mrs Mukesh looked up wearily, “Isn’t that what you shout everyday?” “Yeah but you never know!”
“Never know what?” “Whether Anil’s overtaken me!” “But he can’t, he’s not as good a businessman as you his brother!” “But he’s just twenty five billion short of me, and with just a twenty five billion difference my dear we’ve got to be careful he doesn’t overtake me in the night!”
“So that’s why you are so restless at night, looking out of the window to see whether he’s building a house larger than yours?” Mukesh looked a little sheepish, “You can’t be too sure ‘bout anything!”
“It’s getting a little difficult dear! I can’t take it anymore! The amount we scrounge and save not to let a dollar or two get away! It’s difficult living all day long in this heat! Why can’t we put the AC on or at least the fan?” “We have to adjust dear. We’ve got to save on the electricity bill!”
“And put it on only when we have guests?” “Of course!” “So you think by saving electricity, not making any telephone calls and not buying new clothes for Diwali we can save…” “Money saved is a billion made!” “Who said that?”
“Why me Mukesh! I’m thinking of stopping the newspapers!” “You already stopped the cable guy, how are we going to get the news?” “Your friend in the next building! Ask if she’ll send the papers after she’s read them!” The phone rang in the hall and Mrs Mukesh rushed to pick it up, “Hello,’ she said, “Oh it’s you madam! Our son’s kindergarten teacher,” whispered his wife.
“What does she want?” asked Mukesh “Asking why our son’s not going for the class picnic!” “No!” said Mukesh, “five hundred rupees! It’s too costly” “It’s okay madam,” said Mrs Mukesh, “he’ll be at home readin’ a book!” “Mukesh,” says Mrs Mukesh wearily, “why can’t we just be ordinary millionaires?” “You joking?” asked her husband, “being the fourth richest in the world takes a lot of hard work, do you see?” Like I said are you too giving up quality life, family relationships trying to be number one, in your job or society?
