Amanullah KhanSaturday, February 05, 2011 - Karachi—Thousands of used luxury cars above 1300cc are waiting for clearance at the Karachi port following relaxation in age limit of the used cars, it is learnt.
Informed sources said thousands of cars shipped to the Karachi port posed challenge to the federal cabinet decision of extending age-limit of used cars up to 5-year as many of them are 10 year old and even older.
The custom official report testifies violations of the car import policy at massive level by the dealers of the cars, as repeatedly brought into government’s knowledge by the local assemblers.
All used vehicles, to be cleared expectedly after SRO issuance by Ministry of Commerce (MoC), are defying the government’s assurance regarding protecting local auto industry while strictly prohibiting luxury cars and more than five years old used brands.
The Ministry of Commerce had assured local assemblers that local auto industry would not be affected from the government’s decision on imported cars as 1,300 CC and above brand would not be allowed.
The local assemblers forewarned the government repeatedly that the dealers of used cars would exploit the import policy heavily in the light of previous experiences in the country, which would directly hit the sales of locally-made brands instead of intensifying competition in the local markets.
The Import General Manifest (IGM) 8700 report showed that used Toyota Corolla are of models 1995, with bill of lading dated January 24, 2011, have reached Karachi. Besides, Korean used cars Matiz of 1998 model have landed at Karachi and are awaiting clearance.
As per official documents, the containers docked at the Karachi port carrying the used cars such as Toyota Belta 17, Toyota Corolla 236, Toyota Hiace 12, Toyota Fielder 36, Toyota Ractic 3, Toyota Passo 44, Toyota Platz 4, Toyota Probox 7, Toyota Premio 40 Toyota Porte 2 Toyota Vitz 180, Toyota Prado 9, Toyota Land Cruiser SW 1, Toyota Wish 8, Toyota Axio 4, Toyota Succeed 1, Toyota Rav4 1, Toyota old cars 24, Daihatsu Mira 20, Daihatsu Terios kid 6, Mercedes c180 1, Mercedes Benz 1, Suzuki Alto 16, Suzuki Every 16, Suzuki Kei 15, Suzuki Servo 3, Suzuki Swift 1, Suzuki wagon R 3, Nissan Truck 14, Nissan Tida 1, Nissan Clipper 1, Nissan March 1, Nissan Clipper 1, Nissan pickup 4x4 1, Mazda Carol 1, Mazda Truck 32, Honda Civic 1, Hino truck 5, Korean cars 111, Ford Ranger d/c 240, others (not recognized) 368.
The above-mentioned facts clearly depicted that auto dealers are abusing the policy and shipping 10 years old or even older cars to Pakistan in the name of facilitating overseas Pakistanis under personal baggage, transfer of residence and gift schemes.
The violation of import policy at large has showed that dealers must have strong support from the corridors of the government, which has been changed drastically to benefit people of influential class instead of common man.
Experts slammed the government’s decision to relax used car import policy, saying it will eat up foreign exchange and revenues of the government whereas the local industry will be hurt seriously and result in unemployments.
