Iceberg Raja..!

Thursday, November 25, 2010 - In India, the union telecom minister, A. Raja, is caught with his hand in the cookie jar, but instead of resigning gracefully, he shouts, screams and shrieks, turns his head in cocky stance and refuses to give up his seat. I believe from this attitude that he is just the tip of the iceberg.

Only one ninth of an iceberg lies above water, the rest of the nearly ninety percent of it, lies hidden below, and that hidden part is what gives stability to the small portion above. I don’t think there’s much need to wonder what the just sacked minister’s hidden portion is.

Imagine a man is caught and his party instead of disowning him threatens to pull down the government! It’s like saying, ‘I am a thief, so what?’ And because an ancient chief minister in Chennai continued to support this tainted man, he continued to walk and talk brazenly, infuriating the nation with his ‘ no one can get me’ stance.

Unfortunately, quite often no one can get them in their local area. It’s only when they do their dastardly deeds on the national arena that they sometimes get caught. One has just to look at the Gujarat Chief Minister. In his state he is worshipped, whereas on the national scene he is treated like a bigot.

In other words that huge chunk of ice that lies under the surface of water is ourselves: Local voters! We are the ones who have allowed this small one ninth portion to go above water and become destructive to all around. Instead of stopping the rot when we first see it, we allow it to grow, till it mushrooms and becomes a national and international scandal. And why have we allowed these icebergs to grow?

Because we were too scared to oppose them on the local level. No doubt they were bullies; one has just to see the body language of Mr Raja to see a bully, but watch him closely and you would have seen that it is also a man who is putting on an act of bravado. He is actually frightened inside. All bullies are really afraid. And that’s what we need to get at, when they start growing at the local level; their fear, and generally it’s a fear of themselves.

Most bullies bully, because they feel inadequate; they may be big in size but they feel less about their education, or intelligence or whatever.

Catch them at the local level, pour boiling water on the ice even as it forms and you won’t have an iceberg making an ass of itself on the national level. Iceberg Raja should have been melted many years ago in Madras..!
