Find your gift..!

Robert Clements

Sunday, June 27, 2010 - Many of us race from one thing to another, driven by our need to accomplish, yet never feeling fulfilled or stopping long enough to appreciate our worth. Lasting fulfillment doesn’t come from reaching another goal or deadline.

Once the thrill of the chase is over, there has to be more to your life than just accomplishing another goal. Our challenge is to find out what talent God has gifted us with! Ask yourself, ‘What is my gift?” It’s not what others believe about you that matters, it’s what you know about yourself!

Just this morning I was telling my daughter that I was not as good as a speaker as she thought I was. “You must be kidding dad,” she said, “I think that’s your gift!”

“No it isn’t!” I told her, “I try to do a good job because I work at it, but I don’t enjoy speaking like I do my writing!” And I’m sure there are many of you who are doing something they are not too happy about doing. If you’re struggling to find your place in life, maybe this story will help. Sparky didn’t have much going for him. In high school he flunked Latin, Algebra, English and Physics. He made the golf team but promptly lost the only important match of the season; then lost the consolation match. He was awkward socially. More shy than disliked, he never once asked a girl out on a date in high school.

One thing, however, was important to Sparky: drawing. He was proud of his artwork even though nobody else appreciated it.

He submitted cartoons to the editors of his high school yearbook, but they were rejected. Even so, he aspired to be an artist. After high school he sent samples of his work to the Walt Disney Studios. Again he was rejected. But Sparky didn’t quit! He decided to write his autobiography in cartoons. The popularity of his cartoon strip eventually led to countless books, television shows, and licensing opportunities. Sparky, you see, was Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip, possibly the most famous cartoonist of all time.

Like his main character, Charlie Brown, Schulz seemed unable to succeed at many things, but he made the most of his talent, refused to quit, and ended up on top! So find your gift and do likewise..!
