CM gives go ahead for Youth Festival

Wednesday, October 16, 2013 - Lahore—Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has given approval to holding of Youth Festival-2013 which will start from the first week of December. Giving approval to holding of the Horse and Cattle Show, the Chief Minister directed to set up Youth Commission to polish the talent of youth.

He said that international matches of hockey, cricket and other sports should also be arranged during youth festival and renowned wrestlers associated with World Wrestling Entertainment be invited.

He was presiding over a meeting regarding holding of Youth Festival 2013, here today. Provincial Minister for Education and Sports Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Member National Assembly Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Secretary Sports, DG Sports Board Punjab and concerned officers were present in the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said that Punjab government is implementing a comprehensive programme for the promotion of healthy activities in the province under which not only youth festival but other competitions were also held. He said that a network of playgrounds is being laid all over the province.

He said that promotion of healthy activities is of vital importance in the present age of mental stress. The Chief Minister said that Pakistani youth are talented and new talent can be explored by promoting such sports activities. He said that youth festival not only helps in promoting healthy sports activities but also discourages the trend of extremism.

He said that youth festival is a revolutionary programme to polish the talent of youth and this event last year also yielded glorious results while a number of international records were also set.

Shahbaz Sharif said that maximum opportunities should be provided to the youth for participating in the festival and not only hockey, cricket and international events of other sports be arranged but prominent wrestlers of WWE should also be invited to make this event attractive. He said that paragliding championship should also be arranged during the festival.

The Chief Minister said that Horse and Cattle Show has been a cultural tradition of Punjab, which, besides healthy activities also promotes trade and industrial activities. Therefore, it has been decided to revive this event, he added. Shahbaz Sahrif also appreciated the services of Provincial Minister for Education and Sports Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and Secretary Sports for holding youth festival and other competitions last year.

Provincial Minister for Education and Sports Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan gave briefing to the meeting. He said that competitions of various sports would be held at school, union council, tehsil, district, division, province and international level.

He said that Guinness Book of World Records as well as other international institutions like Believe It Or Not will also review the world record to be set in the youth festival. The soft image of Pakistan would be further be strengthened through setting new world records in the youth festival, he added.
