Staff ReporterFriday, April 26, 2013 - Karachi—Caretaker Chief Minister Sindh, Justice (Retd) Zahid Kurban Alavi Thursday called for concerted efforts to create awareness among men, the main decision makers for safeguarding the environment.
He was addressing the grant letters’ award ceremony for local fishing communities and stakeholders, organised by “Mangroves for the Future Programme (MFP)” .
Grants worth US $ 310,000 are being provided to a vast segment including government organisations, civil society, media and academia interested in implementing projects focussed on natural resources conservation and their sustainable development along the coast of the country.
The CM said men, in particular, who in our social context are the earners of livelihood, have to be efficiently motivated to protect natural resources and ensure sustainable use of these.
“Co-relation between human existence and natural resources have to be well understood by people in general,” said the CM. Zahid said a realistic approach is needed and safe alternate sources of energy have to be provided to the coastal communities for protection of mangroves.
The grant award ceremony that coincided with the 9th inaugural ceremony of national coordinating body meeting of MFP, engaged in implementing its activities through small and medium grants’ projects.
