He was addressing a training workshop for sanitary inspectors held here at TMA Hall. The training workshop was arranged and organized jointly by Department of Health and The Micronutrient Initiative.
He emphasized the role of sanitary inspectors in the implementation of laws regarding the ban on the production and sale of non-iodized salt as severe iodine deficiency causes mental retardation, low mental capability, deafness, muteness, Goiter, still births and abortions. He further added that use of iodized salt is vital to IQ and if we are able to ensure 100% adequate salt iodization, then our children will be able to contribute to thenational development. He appreciated the supportive measures of The Micronutrient Initiative to curb IDDs.
Ehtesham-ul-Haq Tariq, Field Officer of the Micronutrient Initiative, shared that Universal Salt Iodization Programme was making great progress and told the gathering that use of iodized salt has risen to 69% (NNS 2011) from 17% (NNS 2001) and with concerted efforts we would be able to ensure 100% use of iodized salt at households level. Dr Zia Ullah Siddiqui, DOH, and Mushtaq Ahmad, District Focal Person also addressed the participants.
