Women violance Law to be reviewed

Sunday, September 23, 2012 - Karachi—Sindh Minister for Women Development, Tauqeer Fatima and Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly, Shahla Raza will jointly co-chair a seminar to review measures required for early adoption of domestic violence bill in the province.

The moot to be hosted by Aurat Foundation will be attended by senior activists, journalists and women professionals from different sections of the society.

The Motive of the meeting will be to convince Sindh Government to pass the domestic violence bill as after the passage of the 18th amendment, the bill falls under the provincial governments’ domain.

The upper house of the parliament (Senate) has already passed the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill in Feb 2012.

Early passage of the law in Sindh is extremely important as an overall 6.74 % increase was reported in violence against women (VAW) in the country during 2011 compared to 2010. According to fourth annual report published by Aurat Foundation 8539 women became victims of violence in 2011 against 8000 in 2010.

In 2009, the incidents of violence against women were 8548 whereas in 2008 the number of VAW were registered to be 7571.—APP
