Staff shortage causes low literacy rate

Friday, September 21, 2012 - Lahore—Shortage of staff as well as lack of facilities at public institutions are major reasons of poor literacy rate and low quality of education in the province.

“How you can expect increase in literacy rate and improvement in quality of education in a situation where half of the posts of teachers reamain vacant in government educational institutions”, President Punjab association for subject specialists (PASS), Rana Atta Muhammad said while talking to APP here Thursday.

He regretted that 50% posts of the teachers are vacant against the sanctioned strength in higher secondary schools in the province and urged the authorities to take concrete steps in this regard. PASS president has urged the government to provide basic facilities such as laboratories, research equipment, toilets etc in the schools where these facilities are lacked.

He said that the government educational institutions have lot of problems and shortcomings yet they are giving encouraging results: Quoting results of FA/FSC annual examination 2012, he said that 10 students of the government higher secondary schools were among the first three top position holders in different boards of intermediate and secondary education in the province.
