‘Sindh to cope with rains water’


Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - Karachi—The Government has decided to construct a mega canal across Sindh province down to the Arabian sea, having feeders from Balochistan and South Punjab, besides clearing all natural water passages to deal with monsoon heavy rain water effectively.

This year also rain-generated flood from Balochistan has badly hit upper Sindh districts which is a matter of serious concern for the Government, said Federal Minister for Disasters Management Rana Muhammad Farooq Saeed Khan.

He was briefing the media about the rescue and relief operations by the Government in rain affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab, here at Pakistan People’s Party Media Cell on Monday afternoon.

Sindh Minister for Rehabilitation Haji Muzaffar Shujra also joined him in the briefing.

Rana Muhammad Farooq Saeed Khan said that during his visit to the rain affected areas of Sindh on Sunday, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf supported the proposal that a large size canal must be constructed to manage heavy rains water specially coming from Balochistan, which causes big losses in kind and human in Sindh every year.

“ Construction of mega canal across Sindh can only help manage the heavy monsoon rains water flow and avert big losses of human life and kind,” he emphasized.

The existing natural passages of rain and flood water in the province would also be cleared from all kind of encroachments for the protection of life and property of people of Sindh, he said.

He said that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf were personally monitoring the rescue and relief operations in rain/flood affected areas of the country.

He pointed out that this year , the rain affected areas of Sindh and Balochistan had received more than 500 milli meters rain in one week which has broken the record of last one century. —APP
