Build, don’t destroy..!

Robert Clements

Friday, August 17, 2012 - He looked like a quiet man. I thought he was the silent type, because there was no smile on his face, nor did he look up when I passed him, till one day I heard his voice, “Bob, have you seen the toilets?” “No!”

I said truthfully, “Never felt the need, as I live close by!” “They are filthy!” he said, “Smelling!” “So we’ve got to do something about them,” I said as he led the way to the toilets in the park. “Yes,” he said, “Let’s change the committee!” “Whoa! Whoa!” I exclaimed, “Not so fast mister, what I meant is that we need to do something about the toilets!”

“Why should we?” he said, “It’s the committee’s responsibility!” “So let’s help the committee,” I said as I dialed a plumber’s number. “The plumber said he’d have a look at it, and also said that he would get it rectified by tomorrow, since he felt it was a choked pipe!”

I told the unsmiling man, “So dear my friend, by tomorrow you’ll have a clean un-smelly toilet!” I could see that he was not very happy. He wasn’t because the toilets were not the real issue, the real issue was that he wanted to destroy, not build.

You can see such people everywhere. I see it now in the opposition parties who even if it is for the good of the nation will destroy the ruling party rather than build the nation. “But Mr Opposition member, your shooting down of this bill will have many people going to bed hungry!”

“So what? We won’t suffer. The ruling party will be blamed!” In my mind, I see the man in the park again: “Bob, have you seen the toilets?” “No!” I said truthfully, “Never felt the need, as I live close by!” “They are filthy!” he says, “Smelling!” “Okay,” I say, “so what shall we do?” “I’ve got a plumber,” says the man with a smile, Can I bring him here and get the job fixed?” “Let me talk to the committee,” I say and then tell him, “Yes the committee says to please go ahead, they also want to know your name!”

You can bet your last bit of money that the same man will be inducted into the committee soon, because people like builders. But what most of us want to do is destroy, so let’s change ourselves, to build, not destroy..!
