Hospitals & unhygienic conditions

Hashim Abro

Saturday, August 04, 2012 - It is no secret that health, hygiene and clean environment still remain a grave serious challenge in Sindh province. While visiting various hospitals at district and taluka level one can witness appalling sanitation conditions in those. From the situation it appears that health, hygiene and welfare of the people of the province has not been the priority of past and present rulers. Although millions of rupees allocated for this purpose but those are notoriously misused.

Surgical wards, corridors, doctors rooms, receptions and toilets in civil hospitals across the province, in particular, in the upper and lower Sindh districts are dilapidated. Look at the condition of Civil Hospital, Larkano, Civil Hospital Sukkur, Civil Hospital Shikarpur etc. Most hospitals do not have properly functioning toilets and the toilets which these hospitals, dispensaries, Basic health and rural health units have; those provide a springboard for the spread of diseases. In many hospitals such as Civil Hospital Jacobabad, patients and their relatives-attendants use unclean water both for drinking and toilet purpose. It is also seen that rats plague several civil hospitals in the province. Mad dogs and cats keep on moving here and there in the lawns and corridors of hospitals. Since the unsanitary conditions are appalling in Sindh hospitals and dispensaries, therefore, those need a great sanitary setting, such as municipal services, and environmental sanitation so as to save lives of patients and their relatives who usually contract various deadly diseases and die premature death.
