Strands of grey..!
There are many of us who get perturbed when we see our first strand of grey; it suddenly reminds us we aren’t getting any younger. We look at grey strand in horror, and in our minds comes the feeling that we are mortal, that our days are numbered. Yes, your days are numbered, and I doubt you and I have heard of anyone in our generation who has lived forever, so what’s wrong in being reminded that we have so many years left on earth? A few days ago, a writer and author of a book, which has already sold thirty thousand copies came home along with his wife, and asked me how my book was getting along. “Very slow,” I said, “There’s too many other things on my mind!”
“There will always be other things on your mind Bob,” he said gently as his wife nodded, “But time will not wait for you to get rid of those other things! Your business is to write!” And maybe that’s what our first grey hair should remind us; that we are here on earth for a specific business, and it’s for that, we should focus our energies. How often I find as I sit down to write this daily column, that some telephone call disturbs me. Some problem creeps up. Some annoying person lands up with something he says that disturbs me.
And in a jiffy I have succumbed to distraction. Coming back to my daughter who is studying to be a psychologist, she says that when she counsels someone, she has to learn to cut off everything else that is distracting her. “I have to focus on my patient, completely and fully!” she says. Do we do that in life? Have you been focusing on what is most important in your life? It could be your family, who are looking for support during a trying period. Are you focusing on solving the problem or are you distracted with your depression and all the other mood swings that go with it?
Walk to the mirror with me. Look at your head of hair, or if you are bald, at strands clinging to the back of your head or sides. Touches of grey? If not, they’ll soon be there. Stare hard at them. Stare hard at them everyday of your life, and let them remind you, fiercely and aggressively that you need to focus, completely and surely on what you are here on this world for. Let your strands of grey worry you no more, but instead become a positive reminder of what you have to focus on..!
